Our planet, Earth, will get a second moon, briefly.
Background
The Earth will have a temporary
second moon in its orbit starting next week. The moon, which is actually a
diminutive asteroid, is about the size of a bus. It is about 33 feet long and
it will stay in Earth’s orbit for about 2 months. NASA-funded scientists have
named this second moon 2024 PT5 and it can only be seen with the aid of a
telescope.
This asteroid poses no threat to
our planet and after its 2-month orbit; it will be flung back into space. It will
make a return to Earth’s orbit in 2055.
My Comments
Professor Adam Frank is the name of
the scientist who spoke in this video. He explained the phenomenon of the
second moon in clear and accessible language and made it quite engaging. It is reassuring
to hear that the asteroid poses no imminent danger to our planet. The idea of
an asteroid threating the Earth is the concept of several science fiction
movies from the 90s. Armageddon starring
Bruce Willis and Ben Affleck, is one of the most popular examples. Unfortunately,
I do not have a professional telescope so I would not be able to catch this
one.
Fun Fact
Several planets in our solar system
have multiple moons. Mars has a pair of moons named Phobos and Deimos. Jupiter,
Saturn, Neptune and Uranus combined have more than 200 moons.
